Lamont Refuses to Debate

Chester, Connecticut — July 7, 2010 — While I have great respect for all of the candidates in the gubernatorial race, Ned Lamont’s actions of late cannot go without comment. Last week it was his attempted shift from a Democratic Party torch bearer to independent candidate (small i) completely ignoring his past record. This week the issue is his refusal to take on the issues in a moderated debate. Doesn’t Ned get it? The voters of Connecticut deserve an honest, open debate of the issues. Refusing to participate is a slap in the face to the process and to the electorate.

Apparently Ned, along with many of the other candidates, place great importance in spending thousands of dollars stalking each other with video hounds hoping to catch a faux pas on tape. Is that really what we have reduced ourselves to, focusing on bloopers over content and message?

While the Democrats and Republicans are centered on their primaries for the next month, the Independent Party will be continuing to build on our cushion of petition signatures. With over 9,000 collected (7,500 valid signatures required) it is a certainty that I will be on the November ballot along with the entire Independent Party slate. If Mr. Malloy believes a debate will help the voters of Connecticut understand his positions, and needs an opponent, I am available. If he expects to win the primary then we will be facing each other sooner or later. Either way, I look forward to debating the issues with the primary winners and focusing on issues, not bloopers and sound bites.
