Marsh Opposes Paid Sick Day Legislation
Chester, Connecticut — February 25, 2010 — Republican Tom Marsh, exploring a run for the governor’s office, opposes Senator Edith Prague’s proposed legislation on paid sick days.
Marsh believes, “An unpaid sick day is much better than no job at all”. Tom goes on to say that “though it may be a political risk to point out, as a small business owner I can assure you that for every compelling story from a motivated employee who makes a case for paid sick days, there is a line of lesser motivated workers that will find it more convenient to take a day off rather than go to work in order to use up their new found benefit.” This is particularly true since you can't carry the days forward. This bill will result in increased operating costs, lost productivity, fewer employment opportunities, and increased consumer prices.
Regarding the vision of the state legislature, Tom points out, “Prague and her proponents must think Connecticut business operates in a vacuum. Until the legislature realizes that myopic legislation such as this has real costs, we will not see prosperity return to Connecticut. The opportunity cost of employment that is never realized may be hard to quantify, but if Connecticut’s current economic crisis does not make believers out of a doubting legislature that the cost is real, perhaps their removal from office in November will.”
